What is seafood?
Seafood is any edible aquatic animal or plant. Commonly-eaten types of seafood would be fishes, shellfish and seaweed.

Seafood are however, generally more expensive than meat and poultry.
Seafoods are broken down into 2 groups :
  • Fish
  • Shellfish
And are further broken down to :

  • White fish
  • Oily fish
  • Molluscs
  • Crustaceans
Fish:
Where do we get our fish? We get them from the wild, either rivers or oceans, or fishes that are specially farmed.
Fishes are categorized as white fish or oily fish based on the amount and types of fats found in its body. They can also be categorized as freshwater fish or saltwater fish depending on where they are found.

White fish are fishes with flesh of low or no fat content, this makes the flesh white and dry.Unlike oily fish, fats can only be found in the liver.
Examples of white fish :
  • Cod
  • Pomfret a.k.a ikan bawal
  • Red snapper a.k.a ikan merah
  • Sea bass a.k.a ikan siakap
  • Catfish a.k.a ikan keli
  • yellow-branded scad a.k.a ikan selar kuning
Oily fishes on the other hand have flesh that has a fair amount of oil (at least 5%) spreaded throughout. Its flesh is darker compared to a white fish.
Examples of oily fish :
  • Mackerel a.k.a ikan tenggiri
  • Grouper a.k.a ikan kerapu

Shellfish:
Shellfishes are invertebrates(without a backbone). They are split up into two groups, molluscs and crustaceans

Molluscs are small, soft-bodied aquatic animals with no legs.
Some molluscs are protected by a hard outer shell ,examples would be abalone and conch. At the same time, other molluscs such as cockles, clams and oysters are defended by TWO hard shells!
Even though squids and octopuses do not have hard shells to protect them , they do have soft inner shells and are still considered molluscs.

Crustaceans on the contrary, has legs and de-jointed body. They have a crust-like shell or external skeletons covering them.
