Nutrition composition of seafoods

Seafoods are high in protein and amazingly low in calories, total fat and saturated fat thou its an animal source! Additionally, seafood is also high in vitamins and minerals.

Nutrients of Fish :

  • Contains about twenty percent of the high quality proteins of red meat and poultry
  • Proteins of high biological value(18-20% of its overall weight )
  • Vitamins A and D, found mostly in flesh of an oily fish and liver of a white fish 
  • Fats ,but mainly poly-unsaturated fats e.g omega-3 fatty acids ---> essential fatty acids that are required for healthy human development, it cannot be produced by the human body and therefore must be obtained through food
  • B-group vitamins,namely vitamins B1, B2 and B6 are associated with healthy development of the nervous system
  • Minerals such as sodium, chlorine, iodine, potassium and calcium(if eaten with bones e.g ikan bilis and sardines)
  • Good source of other minerals such as selenium, zinc, iodine and iron
  • Low in sodium
  • Low in saturated-fat
Fishes is also made of water and cholesterol. 80% of white fish and 67% of oily fish is made up of water. Cholesterol is lower compared to meat.

Nutrients of Shellfish:
  • Proteins of high biological value (around 15%)
  • Fats ,but mainly poly-unsaturated fats e.g omega-3 fatty acids ---> essential fatty acids that are required for healthy human development, it cannot be produced by the human body and therefore must be obtained through food
  • Minerals such as iron, iodine and calcium.
Shellfish like squids and prawns are also high in water however is high in cholesterol content.Thus, we should eat shellfishes in moderation.
